BIRTH DOULA WORKSHOP
July 24, 25 & 26, 2005
Join other prospective birth doulas and allied health professionals in an intensive doula training workshop, featuring instructors Penny Simkin, PT, CD(DONA) and Kathy McGrath, MSW, FACCE, CD(DONA). Note that there are discounts on course fees for early registration and for DONA members.
The Workshop
The workshop is for anyone interested in assisting women and their families to have a satisfying birth experience. It uses texts and supplementary literature, videos, slides, small group activities, hands-on practice, and role-play to develop theoretical knowledge and practical skills as a doula. Attendance constitutes one step in the process to become a DONA certified birth doula. Contact hour applications have been made for nursing and childbirth education credits.
On completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe the significance of birth to women and their families.
- Define the role of the birth doula.
- Explain the DONA Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics for the birth doula.
- List benefits of a continuous birth doula on obstetrical and psychological outcomes based on fourteen trials.
- Describe the emotional and physical needs of laboring women and their partners.
- Compare specific characteristics of laboring women who are and are not coping well.
- Demonstrate comfort measures and optimal birth positions for laboring women.
- Analyze the birth doula's role when her client has an epidural.
- Describe the birth doula's role in the prenatal and postpartum visit.
- Describe the birth doula's role during a cesarean birth.
- Describe the birth doula's role with the family during the immediate postpartum period.
- Discuss the process for DONA birth doula certification.
Prerequisites for Participants
Childbirth educators, nurses with labor and delivery experience, midwives or midwifery students, and those who have attended another birth doula workshop have the appropriate experience. If a participant lacks the above experience, she should prepare by attending a complete series of childbirth education classes as an observer, viewing as many birth videos as possible, touring a hospital labor and delivery unit, and reading required texts before the workshop. If possible, the participant should attend some births. It is assumed the participants are knowledgeable about the following:
- Anatomy of the human reproductive system, including the breasts
- Physiology of pregnancy, birth, postpartum and breastfeeding
- Definitions of common medical terms relating to labor
- Common procedures and tests used during normal birth, including their risks and benefits
- Pain medication and anesthesia administration and effects
- Cesarean birth indications and procedure
- Normal newborn appearance and procedures
- Basic relaxation techniques, breathing patterns and other comfort measures for labor
- Benefits of breastfeeding

Trainers
Penny Simkin, PT, CD(DONA) is a registered physical therapist and childbirth educator. She is a DONA-certified birth doula, doula trainer and DONA Mentor. A Founder of DONA, Penny is an internationally known speaker, and well-known author based in Seattle, Washington.
Kathy McGrath, MSW, FACCE, CD(DONA) is a perinatal social worker and certified childbirth educator from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is a DONA-certified birth doula, doula trainer, DONA Mentor, and speaker. Kathy is on the faculty of Lamaze International and the University of Pittsburgh's Childbirth Educator Program.

Included in the fee are beverages and snacks on Sunday and Monday, and continental breakfast on Monday and Tuesday. Also included is the course manual. Space is limited and the workshop is expected to fill early. Register for the Birth Doula Workshop on the conference registration form. You will receive written confirmation of your registration.
The registration deadline is July 11, 2005. To cancel your registration and receive a refund, a written request to the DONA office must be postmarked by the registration deadline. No refunds will be given for requests postmarked after the registration deadline. A non-refundable processing fee of $50 will be retained in all cases for each workshop fee refund request.

POSTPARTUM DOULA WORKSHOP
July 24-27, 2005
Join other prospective postpartum doulas and allied health professionals in an intensive postpartum doula workshop with instructor Jacqueline Kelleher, CD(DONA), PCD(DONA).
There are discounts on workshop fees for early registration and for DONA members.
The Workshop
The workshop is for anyone interested in assisting families through the weeks following the birth of a new baby. It uses texts and an accompanying manual, videos, group discussion, role modeling, role-play and hands-on practice to develop theoretical knowledge and practical skills as a postpartum doula. Attendance constitutes one step in the process to become a DONA certified postpartum doula.
On completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe findings of research that has been conducted on tasks included in the definition of a postpartum doula.
- List the responsibilities of a postpartum doula.
- Define the role of the postpartum doula and how it differs from that of a baby nurse or mother’s helper.
- Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of newborn care.
- Describe breastfeeding basics such as latch and good positioning.
- Describe the role of the postpartum doula in breastfeeding support.
- Describe postpartum depression.
- List ways in which the postpartum doula can support both parents through the experience of postpartum depression.
- Describe coping strategies for parents to use during the postpartum adjustment.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the postpartum doula’s role as an educator of both mother and other family members.
- Describe the importance of a thorough knowledge of reliable resources for referral in a variety of situations.
- List the benefits of skin-to-skin contact between parent and baby.
- Describe the doula’s role in facilitating the process of skin-to-skin contact.
- List strategies and appropriate situations for using Active Listening skills.
- List physical postpartum changes commonly experienced by the mother and describe the doula’s role in aiding her recovery from birth.
- List potential situations in which the doula would be supporting the family through loss and grief, and describe her role.
- Describe the doula’s role in integrating a new baby into the family.
- Describe role definition and common interpersonal changes following the birth of a baby.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of how the birth experience impacts the postpartum experience.
- Describe the unique needs and role of the doula supporting families with multiples.
- Describe the importance and process of client contact and administration issues.
- Describe the ways a doula may gain credentials.
Prerequisites for Participants
Participants are expected to have a working knowledge of the following:
- Physical and emotional adjustment in the mother after birth
- Newborn characteristics and care
- Breastfeeding basics
- Common breastfeeding difficulties and possible solutions.
To be sure participants are adequately prepared for their Postpartum Doula Workshop, the following is required BEFORE attending the training. For details on completing these prerequisites, please see the DONA Web site at or by contacting DONA at (888) 788-DONA.
- Required reading: From the DONA required reading list, the participant must have completed readings from the following categories: Becoming a Mother; The Newborn; and Breastfeeding.
- Breastfeeding Preparation: The participant must have completed at least one of the options before attending the postpartum doula workshop.
The participant should be prepared to present proof of participation or the notes and essays from her investigative projects.

Trainer
Jacqueline Kelleher, CD(DONA), PCD(DONA) is a DONA birth and postpartum doula trainer and DONA postpartum doula mentor. She is the author of Nurturing the Family: the Guide for Postpartum Doulas, and has trained doulas both within and outside the U.S. Jacqueline is the Director of Postpartum Services for DONA. She is the coordinator of Delaware Valley Birthing Partners, a doula cooperative in the Philadelphia area, where she provides both postpartum and birth doula services.

BIRTH DOULA TRAINER WORKSHOP
July 24, 25, 26 & 27, 2005
This workshop will prepare qualified participants to design their own birth doula workshop curriculum and to apply for DONA approval.
Workshop Times & Fees
Participants must observe the doula workshop on July 24, 25 and July 26 plus attend the doula trainer workshop on July 26 (3:00 pm – 8:00 pm) and 27 (8:00 am – 1:00 pm), 2005. Completion of this workshop constitutes one required step for DONA approval as a birth doula trainer. Course fees postmarked by June 6 are $425 and after June 6 are $475 and includes the doula workshop. The cancellation policy is the same as for the Doula Workshop.
Qualifications
Before registering for this workshop, your qualifications must be reviewed and accepted. You must meet all of the following qualifications:
- DONA Certified Birth Doula (active status) in good standing;
- Current DONA member;
- Trained childbirth educator (having received formal training in childbirth education and/or holding a certificate from a recognized childbirth educator training program);
- Experienced childbirth educator (having taught a minimum of 10 CBE series of at least 12 hours each to groups of at least 4 expectant women, with or without partners);
- Experienced doula (having attended a minimum of 12 births providing labor support and no clinical care).

- Your resume indicating your educational and employment backgrounds; experience as a childbirth educator (with dates and times of at least 10 class series, the number of participants at each, and a class/topic outline); number of births attended as a doula (not as a nurse or midwife);
- Names and addresses of two references;
- A copy of a certificate (or equivalent) indicating attendance at a childbirth educator training, or certification as a childbirth educator;
- Your certificate indicating DONA birth doula certification.
You will be notified within three weeks whether you are accepted and can register to attend. Do not register for the conference until you have been notified, if your attendance depends on your acceptance in the Doula Trainer Workshop.

POSTPARTUM DOULA TRAINER WORKSHOP

Participants must observe the doula workshop on July 24-27 plus attend the doula trainer workshop on July 27 from 3:00 pm – 8:30 pm. Completion of this workshop constitutes one required step for DONA approval as a postpartum doula trainer. Workshop fees postmarked by June 6 are $450 and after June 6 are $500; this fee includes the doula workshop. The cancellation policy is the same as for the Postpartum Doula Workshop (above).
