PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP A
Infant-focused Family Centered Care: Using the Newborn Behavior Observation (NBO) in the Postpartum Period
Wednesday, July 20, 2005 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
(Registration begins at 7:30 am)
DONA is excited to offer this fantastic, first-time opportunity for experienced doulas and other professionals to learn specialized skills for helping parents and baby discover one another.
The NBO (Nugent, Keefer, O’Brien, Johnson, Blanchard, 2005) was developed as a relationship-building method, to sensitize parents to their newborn’s capacities and individuality, with the goal of fostering the bond between parent and infant and between clinician and family. It consists of a set of 18 neurobehavioral observations, which describe the newborn’s capacities and behavioral adaptation from birth to the third month of life and provides parents with individualized guidance on caregiving based on these behavioral observations. The goal of the NBO training is to provide participants with the theoretical foundations of the NBO, information on how to administer and record the NBO and how to integrate it into work with families in the postpartum period.
Prerequisites
Experienced DONA-certified doula or other parent/infant care professional. Participants must have supported a minimum of 20 families, having spent at least one hour of one-on-one time with each family specifically devoted to helping new parents explore their unclothed newborn (for a minimum of 20 hours total). As part of the registration process, please also send Jacqueline Kelleher a letter describing your experience with new families.
Objectives
- Discuss the theories and concepts of the Newborn BehavioralObservation (NBO) system.
- Describe the contents and uses of the NBO.
- Demonstrate how the NBO is administered.
- Describe how the NBO is used as an educational andrelationship-building tool with parents.
